In the early communities that formed around the Buddha, those communities were defined by a “shared recitation.” This recitation of the refuges and training precepts expressed their shared commitments, orientation, and training. Just so, all these years later, we continue to strengthen the ties of our Dharma community through a shared recitation of the refuges and precepts.
It is the custom at Insight Santa Cruz to offer the refuges and five precepts on the fourth Sunday of each month. We will reflect together on the teachings and express our practice by reciting these together.
